The Bambooha approach for Cape Town
The idea is to sell modular bamboo house kits that can be build up without or with only little technical expertise. This approach leads to minimal costs while allowing to build appealing houses.
It is a common misconception that poor people do not have any money. There are a lot of people with little money that needs to be used wisely. Micro-credits could allow these community members to buy a house that suits their needs and their financials. The townships of Cape Town are a place where many of these people come together. They often face pollution and water problems in addition to their need for better housing.
Cape Town alone hosts more than 109,000 informal shelters. That is although a house is connection to extremely important values, such as privacy, dignity, safety, and health. Bambooha is not about imposing different forms of housing on the people. It is about co-creation, about connecting the people with needs to the people who can serve to fulfill these needs. We can do this together.
